A group of nearly 40 enthusiastic 4th graders from Adelante Charter School recently had the chance to experience something truly special—a trip to Santa Cruz Island, part of Channel Islands National Park. This unforgettable adventure gave the students the opportunity to explore the island’s unique wildlife, beautiful landscapes, and rich history, helping them understand the importance of protecting these special places for future generations.
During their visit, the students were amazed by the island’s rare animals, such as the tiny island fox, which is found only on Santa Cruz Island, and the many plants that can’t be found anywhere else. They also learned about the island’s fascinating history and the vital role national parks play in preserving both nature and cultural heritage. Beyond just facts, the students came away with a deeper appreciation for the environment and why we must care for it.
“It was amazing to see the island fox in person,” said 4th grader Mateo. “I also learned about the rocks on the island, like the chert, volcanic rocks, and metamorphic rocks. The chert was so cool because it’s really old, and the volcanic rocks showed how the island was formed from lava. I didn’t know there were so many different kinds of rocks, and learning how they were all created over millions of years was super interesting. It was fun to be out in nature, seeing all these things, and now I know how important it is to protect places like this so everyone can enjoy them in the future.”
Alexia Límón, a 4th-grade teacher at Adelante Charter School, shared, “When kids see these incredible places up close, it really makes an impression. They realize that caring for the environment isn’t just something adults talk about—it’s something they can do too. I also think the trip connects them with the social studies we talk about and learn in class, helping them make real-world connections to the history and geography we study.”
National parks do so much more than protect plants and animals. They also give us opportunities for outdoor adventure, provide places for scientists to study nature, and help us all understand the importance of conservation. This trip to Santa Cruz Island gave the students a firsthand look at why national parks are so important, inspiring them to think about their role in preserving nature for years to come.
“We’re so happy to have supported this wonderful educational experience,” said Pedro Paz, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Education Foundation. “Through our Teacher Grants Program, we were able to help fund this trip, and we hope it encourages students to continue exploring and protecting the beauty of our national parks.”
The students were guided on their adventure by the knowledgeable crew from Island Packers, who shared insights about the island’s landscapes, wildlife, and history, making the experience even more memorable.
Adelante Charter School, located in Santa Barbara, California, offers a bilingual dual immersion program in both English and Spanish and was recently designated as a California Distinguished School.

In other, civilized, countries, kids in public school have these experiences as well. This is so important for young, growing minds. It’s great that our 6th graders have CIMI at Catalina, but these types of outdoor excursions should be more frequent and in each grade, as appropriate. Imagine if we spent just a fraction of what we spend on more nukes on actually educating and enlightening our next generations?
We have the money, we just chose not to spend it on the children.
We’re spending (wasting) it on their administrators, you know, the paper pushers getting fat pensions and benefits. Look at the salaries. This is why there was a big giant push from Americans to tighten the belts of those in government who spend too much on themselves. Aka – results of the last election.
Too many school administrators are just about covering their asses and teachers’ asses when they do something wrong–kids far too often come last.
MORE OF KIDS OUTDOORS!
I agree, we need to be spending more on the teachers and the actual education materials and field trips than on administration. But, those people still need to be paid. We shouldn’t just give up and say we can’t put more into education because Admin costs so much. We should be INCREASING, not cutting, funds for public education. The vouchers are a joke. It’s time to properly educate our next generation of leaders, even if that means taking funds away from our nukes and other military expenditures. We can’t keep being the dummies with the biggest sticks. Look where that has gotten us today.
Beautiful to read about this! Thanks for sharing your experiences, Adelante Charter!
