2018 Rincon Classic: The Year of the Grommet

By David Powdrell

2018.  In Chinese culture, 2018 is the Year of the Dog.  In Rincon Classic culture, 2018 is the Year of the Grommet.

Congrats to Kilian Garland for his incredible 7th win of the Pro Division.  Kudos to Chris Keet and his band of volunteers and sponsors for hosting yet another fun filled, family-oriented surf contest at our prestigious Rincon Point.

The contest had to be postponed for weeks due to the Thomas Fire followed up by the massive mudslides that inundated Montecito and parts of Carpinteria.  Sprinkle in the fact that this is among the weakest winters for surf and, voila, we had tiny waves for the 2018 Rincon Classic.

Now back to the grommets.  Two-foot surf to a grommet is nearly head high.  It’s safe.  Mom and dad can watch and cheer intently, sometimes intensely.  When the grommets are firing on all cylinders, they’re super fun to watch.

Whereas the Masters, the Legends, the Grand Masters made the best of the small surf, from my perspective it was the grommets that made the Rincon Classic a winner this year.  This was, in my humble opinion, “The Year of the Grommet”.
