14 Skaters in Skaters Point

Report of 14 skaters inside Skater’s Point. I wonder what they are doing? Not social distancing.

  1. Seriously… so what? Skateboarding is not an activity that begs for physical closeness like hanging out on a park bench smoking a joint. Yeah, the skate park is closed but if the City was really serious they’d have dumped a couple of dump trucks worth of sand in the rink can called ‘er dun.

  2. Sometimes people get so wrapped up in the dogma they forget the reason for certain rules. Walking on the beach is okay but laying out on the sand is not. Walking around the supermarket with people going by each other with little regard for distancing or personal space is fine but skating is not. Is everyone bereft of common sense any more? Sheesh…. smh.

  3. You know…. if tests, working and reliable tests, were available as promised weeks and weeks ago we’d be able to know who is infected and who is not. Instead the focus has shifted to jump starting the economy regardless of what the virus is doing and who cares who might be infected or not. Seems a few kids skateboarding is hardly a priority if reliable and available testing isn’t.

  4. @6:38. How do you know they don’t live together? What if their 6′ apart? In the grocery store, you’re on top of each other at times. I’ll stand an wait for people to move on and clear out, but they are clueless. I’m on the let’s skate side, but not in a park. Not yet. I think we’re all being crazy and being way over the top. I’m however always wearing a mask when in any store or dealing with anyone not in my household. Just to make everyone feel safe because that’s all it really is. It’s OMG are you okay? Did I hurt your feelings? It will be okay..

  5. Testosterone will trump good sense at least 99% of the time, excellent thought 7:39 couldn’t agree more. Those ruffians would be much better off if they adhered to that old idiom about doctor visits “an estrogen pill a day with your soy latte”.

  6. 12:18: The source you quote came from the LANL, unfortunately filled with Chinese scientists and also the nuclear lab that has been found and convicted by our Intelligence oversight committees in the past to have stolen, leaked, and/or sold top secret information to the CCP. So should we keep stoking the fear and keep us all locked up in Santa Barbara because of this study, not yet reviewed by many peer groups, for, as John Wayne would say, “another 21 or 22 years”? That would be exactly what our good and trusted friends in China would want, wouldn’t it? Yet another scientific study (ASU) contradicts the LANL study and says the virus is either mutating (as they always do) or becoming less virulent and contagious? Time for CHEMICALSUPERFREAK to chime in whit his thoughts.

  7. First we’re asked to flatten the curve. That’s so successful that it inverts to be less then flat. So lets keep going and eradicate this disease! Sorry, no can do. To many cracks and crevasses to hide. So now the curve will go concave. Concavity is shaped like a pond. Shallow on the ends and deeper in the center. Which means case rates will go up to be maintained under at the flattening horizon in a controlled way. So let them skate. Take their data and trace them if you want. We NEED canaries in this coal mine to better understand the things we do not. There is no benefit to be over zealous and throw your hands up.

  8. The public was asked to “flatten the curve,” a now trite phrase dragged out by Gavin Newsom and the other government tyrants to justify keeping everyone under house arrest. So like scared little rabbits people cowered in their homes, afraid to go out, for fear that the big, bad virus would strike them dead. Now the curve has been flattened but that’s not enough for these tyrants. Now they want to crush the curve and have zero infections and zero deaths, which is impossible. You give a whiff of power to these tyrants and they will use it.

  9. ok this is a bit much…
I’m 49 and grew up skating here. Part of the powell peralta days. These kids are INSTRUCTED by their schools to do 1 hour of PE a day. But we closed our parks. We closed our skate parks. We fear monger and snitch if we see someone outside exercising. Santa Barbara has been a hub for skateboarding. We have also been a hub for harassment. Back when I was 16, they passed the no skating “downtown” laws. They pushed laws against minors, not allowing the minors to speak up and defend ourselves. I get harrassed by these asshats in red shirts simply for skating to WORK. The stigma with skate boarding is too much as well. Would you all rather these kids get into gangs and drugs? I grew up as a street skater with about 5 other guys daily. We were outside. We explored the urban settings. We played hard. We exercised hard. We stayed out until after dark and came home. The city has treated us skaters like crap for too long. We pay taxes. We vote. We raise families here. Stop treating us like criminals just because it’s not something YOU do. That skate park is a massive help for our kids in this community to keep them healthy, socially healthy, mentally healthy and physically healthy. It keeps they (mostly) away from drinking and drugs and vaping and tobacco. Trust me, anyone shows up there with any toxic devices or content, they are starred down and pushed out of the park almost immediately.
Let the kids skate and stop acting like a bunch of bitter cranky 90 y/os. They are doing no harm and if anything, they are doing what they should.
Social distancing. We don’t skate around and hug each other…I saw comments comparing it to shopping at Ralphs. Great comparisson as I was there yesterday on Carrillo and could NOT get anyone in there to back off. I had people in my personal space (like bumping into me to get something). I fish near the sea landing and on the wharf and have people come right NEXT to me when I am fishing. I have had to tell countless idiots to back the f’ up. You have the entire wharf to stare at the ocean. I am fishing here. I am not here for your photo opp with your wife and kids from Orange COunty. So as for a group of kids skating? Leave them alone.

  10. I agree with zerohawk that skaters should be allowed in the skate park as long as our hospital is expected to have plenty of space for treatment. (I don’t like skaters on the sidewalks ever, because it is unsafe for pedestrians.) Most skaters are young and less likely to die of covid. The skate park is a contained space where the rest of us don’t need to go (unlike the grocery stores). Sure, they could all pass the virus between themselves and then come out and infect me. But no scientists or politicians actually expect us to all stay home forever. The shutdown was meant to give our hospitals time to gear up, and to keep the numbers of sick manageable. I, personally, am going to be extra careful for a long time, in hopes that better treatments will be available before I venture out much. And I don’t want the hospitals overwhelmed because that hurts everyone. But we have to expect, even allow, some low level of infection to continue. The skatepark seems like a relatively low risk activity.

  11. ZERO and ANCHOO – I totally agree, skating should be open as long as people are keeping distance. Now, if I could only get youth baseball going again! No hi-fives, wipe down the ball between innings, expanded dugouts, presto! Just kids standing 30+ feet away from each other and getting some air and having fun!

  12. From a former Supreme Court Justice:
“Walkers and strollers and wanderers … these activities are historically part of the amenities of life as we have known them. … These unwritten amenities have been, in part, responsible for giving our people the feeling of independence and self-confidence, the feeling of creativity.” (William O. Douglas)
From various news headlines in California:
    “Beaches and Parks remain closed.”

  13. as for skating on the side walks. that’s what we do. you walk your dogs on the side walk and let them use other peoples property as a toilet. we just skate by. some of us are jerks about it, yes. most of us are not. i always slow down around animals and kids and elderly, but if you’re some dude with headphones on doing a faux jogging bit, i have just as much right to be on the side walk as you do. with mutual respect of course. street skating has been around since roller skates went out. we use curbs, side walks, walls, etc for tricks. we also skate things like drainage ditches and culverts as they make great ramps and bowls. IE Tea bowls and moguls above ‘Cito

  14. I don’t have to cite the code because I did not hear the BOLO cite code over the scanner all I heard is what I posted so posted. If you want to make such a big deal out of everything maybe you should seek help to control those emotions. I don’t have a dog don’t be a dick stay out of the skate park until the fences are down.
