Mud Mania ran amok on 101 in our Tuesday evening pics. Nearly all of the freeway from Ventura to Goleta looks from the air like it could handle one lane each way. But from what we experienced driving from SBA into town and back to 101@154, maybe they're afraid to open it until all lanes are ready for 80mph road wars. Anyway, here's a pic of an apparent mud spill in the NB Patterson offramp that had the freeway closed down to 1 lane. Massive backup all the way to Mission by 5pm or so. Also a pic of the remarkable progress at Olive Mill, with K-rails already in place on the bridge. Looks like only a few hundred feet of mud still, though getting down to the concrete lanes still leaves the wide shoulders and drainage to deal with.

SBitZ.NET has 2pm 101 pix with southbound passable at least to trucks and equipment. Northbound was almost clear then too, and they were cleaning out the drain at the southwest corner of the Olive Mill bridge. Also some zoom pix of La Casa de Maria damage.

For the love of Jehovah open the southbound 101 ! My mother-in-law drove up from Palm Springs the Monday prior, only to visit a few days. She IS STILL HERE.

Flights? Perhaps a nice charter... worth the money no doubt!

101 Mud Mania

I was in the craziness on the NB 101 around 5 last night. I'd been at an appointment on upper State, then got on the 101 . It was crawling. I crept to El Sueno to get off, thinking I'd go Turnpike and up to Cathedral Oaks, but that was crawling, too. While waiting on Turnpike, I saw a lot of cars make U-turns. I don't know if they planned to give the freeway another try or if they were going to go down to Hollister. I eventually made it to Cathedral Oaks, made my left turn, and things cleared after I got past Old San Marcos. Definitely not used to having it take a 1/2 hour+ to get home!

I don't understand at all. Where is the picture of the mud spill at Patterson? Where is the stretch of highway with what looks like new paving? Why does the freeway from Ventura to Goleta look like it could handle only one lane each way?

Kinda looks like the highway is sagging in Montecito...

I agree. its hard to tell because you can't even see where the embankment starts. I don't think 101 is going to be open for at least a couple weeks. the probability that boulders did not damage anything structural on any one of the bridges is pretty low. Even if they did not the road is going to need to be repaved. Its was trashed before it got 9 feet of mud and debris and a fleet of construction equipment scraping it clean. Great to get the images even if they are of something so ugly.
