Please refer to safety tips posted on the Southern California Edison website.

Update by edhat staff
For anyone north of Cathedral Oaks west of Cambridge and east of Carlo Drive, evacuate immediately. The fire is located off Holiday Hill in Goleta and is being called the Holiday Fire and is spreading rapidly. Approximately 1200 residents were told to evacuate the area.
Santa Barbara County Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni reports the fire is "completely out of control, no containment." He stressed anyone living north of Cathedral Oaks between Fairview and Patterson needs to leave immediately.
According to the scanner traffic, firefighters are actively defending structures. Zaniboni confirmed there have been structures lost but they do not have numbers yet on how many.
The fire is wind driven and is burning downhill due to north and northwestern winds, down the Fairview corridor and east towards Patterson.
Zaniboni said their main focus is "life safety then property safety."
Red Cross Shelter is now set up at Goleta Valley Community Center on Hollister Ave. For assistance with animal evacuations, call 805-681-4332.

Mandatory evacuations due to a brush fire on Holliday Hill Road in Goleta. Currently, 50 to 100 structures are threatened as California Highway Patrol has shut down Fairview at Cathedral Oaks.
Families in the area are packing and evacuating between Fairview and Patterson, north of Cathedral Oaks.
Initial reports state the fire may have been caused by the wind knocking a tree branch onto an electrical wire.
Updates will be posted to the top of this article.

Jul 07, 2018 12:05 AMNot a Chinese hoax, folks ... sure it's been hot before and there have been fires before, but records keep getting broken; 3 times as many heat records as cold records. This is just one of many lines of evidence that show that the Earth's atmosphere is warming due to the increasing amount of greenhouse gases, which slow the escape of heat (while not blocking the incoming solar radiation) ... and carbon isotope signatures show clearly that the increased CO2 is the result of the burning of fossil fuels. It's because of all the evidence that there's an overwhelming consensus among climate scientists that AGW is a fact ... not because they're paid to say so or any of the other malarkey coming from the deniers driven by ideology and economics, not a search for the truth. We now have the internal documents that show that the same fossil fuel companies that spent millions upon millions of dollars to spread confusion and uncertainty, themselves knew for decades that human-induced global warming is real.

Jul 08, 2018 11:07 AMMy comment is about the use of twitter and access to emergency information. I don't have a TV and only have an internet and my cell phone. Should the internet go down, I have my cell phone, if that goes out (like it did during thomas fire) I have nothing except my weather radio (which is useless for emergency info), I'm going to look into an emergency radio or police scanner.
One of my "small beefs" was hard it was to access the threat. The website sent me to TWITTER (so twitter is the main source of emergency info??) I just found that odd. On my cellphone I had to create an account on twitter to view the info for any length of time. I ended up using the emergencysb (I think that's the url) and just constantly updating it, looking for any critical evacuation warnings.
Any thoughts on this?

Jul 08, 2018 12:24 PMRe: (so twitter is the main source of emergency info?? I just found that odd. )
Excellent point BRUCEGO. 10-4. Especially since Twitter is rapidly becoming so
yesterday. We advocate for a full range of communication channels in getting
critical emergency information out in the future.
-
1
-
-
Jul 08, 2018 02:53 PMI will say I love twitter during emergencies since you can search a hashtag dedicated to the incident, in this case #holidayfire, and organize it by "latest" posts and there is great information there tweeted by a handful of people who listen to the scanners. it was ahead of all the other information put out there as it is being posted in real time as soon as they hear it.

Jul 08, 2018 09:07 PMBreaking News...Twitter like Facebook is not used much by younger folks...
These platforms come and go...Sad because I have stock in both ...
-
-
-
Jul 08, 2018 09:42 PMWhy would you care about what young people use for social media? If your intent is to receive notifications of emergencies you'll want to be following the first responders the local newsies are quoting or retweeting... I'm thinking BRUCEGO here.
-
1
-
-
Jul 08, 2018 10:09 PMNo intent for multiple posts...My point was trying to support a wide
range of communication channels. Today’s Twitter and Facebook will
be yesterday’s Netscape. To assume everyone is on Twitter is silly.
-
-
-
Jul 10, 2018 05:20 PMI personally appreciate the Twitter education. Getting the salient information
via a multitude of communication channels to an array of endangered folks was my focus. Whether non English speanking, blind or Luddite ...

Jul 08, 2018 11:39 AMFire embers coming into your yard, if the fire is not too close: wear cotton (NO polyester) long sleeve shirt and long pants - protect fragile skin, gloves, face mask, goggles, hat. Heavy boots (cowboy boots, hiking boots) if you have them. To put out embers, use shovels of sand or dirt, water hose, buckets of water, wet mop (cotton long string) to bash out small embers. Fire extinguisher is good but only lasts a few minutes. Only do this as a last resort if you can't evacuate...or weren't informed that the fire is coming in your direction.

Jul 10, 2018 12:48 PM"Chinese hoax" and other simple-minded rumors of that ilk are FALSE. Universally, new studies, long-term statistics and information that can be substantiated confirm that global warming is a FACT. For those who refuse to let facts enter their belief system the world remains flat and the sun revolves around the Earth and always will. Trying to get them to use logic and reason is a waste of your time and effort. It's like arguing with a fanatic True Believer of any religion. It would be more productive to iron your socks.
