A 1.5-magnitude earthquake was detected near Santa Barbara. The quake occurred just over six miles south of Santa Barbara, on October 12, 2025, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The tremor struck at 9:56 p.m. at a depth of 5.3 kilometers.

This follows a 2.2-magnitude earthquake that occurred near Goleta on October 5, 2025. The epicenter was located one mile west-northwest of Goleta.

A quake’s magnitude, location, depth, and local soil conditions typically determine how strongly and widely its tremors are felt. According to the USGS, earthquakes above magnitude 3.0 are usually noticeable to people.

Why is California Prone to Earthquakes?

California records frequent earthquakes largely because of its location between the Pacific and the North American Plates. The San Andreas Fault runs almost the entire length of the state.

The fault system, where the two plates grind past each other, builds up stress that releases as earthquakes. This 800-mile network is one of the most active in the world.

Over the past few days, USGS has reported several minor tremors across California. While the magnitude of the quakes might not be too high, their frequency highlights that the ground is constantly shifting.

In the past week, more than 140 earthquakes have been recorded across the state. So far this year, the most significant earthquake in California occurred 2 kilometers east-southeast of Berkeley on September 9, 2025. With a magnitude of 4.3, the quake occurred at a depth of 7.6 kilometers.

Earthquake Safety Precautions

The USGS outlines four essential steps to stay more prepared for an earthquake.

  • Identify hazards in your home, such as heavy furniture, appliances, or decor that could fall.
  • Prepare a disaster safety plan and decide how you and your family members will reach each other in case of an emergency.
  • Organize emergency supplies in convenient locations at home and vehicles. Ensure that there are ample supplies of medications, a first aid kit, flashlights, snacks, and a minimum of 1 gallon of water a day for person.
  • Organize important documents to minimize financial problems. These documents include copies of your identification, insurance cards, and a list of emergency contact numbers. You can also have photos of belongings in your home to help file an insurance claim.
