1. Pacific Coast Highway, California

One of the most scenic roads in the world, the Pacific Coast Highway stretches nearly 650 miles of California’s coastline and is meant to be enjoyed slowly. The drive offers some of the stunning views of rugged coastlines, cliffs, waterfalls, and beaches. The drive also offers views of natural wonders, such as Big Sur, and historic landmarks, such as the Bixby Bridge.

The 17-Mile Drive in California cruises through Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach in Monterey. The route winds through coastline, mansions, golf courses, and cypress forests to end at the picturesque Carmel-by-the-Sea. Entry to the 17-Mile Drive is $12.25 per vehicle, which gets reimbursed with a purchase of $35 or above at Pebble Beach Resorts restaurants. 

3. Olympic Peninsula Loop, Washington

Hugging around most of the Olympic Peninsula, this route offers travelers the opportunity to enjoy rugged Pacific beaches, temperate rainforests, and snow-covered peaks within the Olympic National Park. Covering over 300 miles, the drive offers diverse experiences, such as shellfish, craft beverages, rainforests, wildlife, and waterfalls.

4. Acadia National Park Loop Road, Maine

This drive on Mount Desert Island, Maine, is one of the best ways to experience the classic features of the Acadia National Park Loop. Traversing the eastern side of Mount Desert Island, the 27-mile-long stretch offers access to highlights of the Acadia National Park and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, and Cadillac Mountain.

5. Overseas Highway, Florida Keys

This 113-mile section of U.S. Route 1 is home to uninterrupted views of the ocean on both sides for almost the entire length of the drive. Known as the “highway that goes to the sea”, the Overseas Highway is a route in the middle of the ocean and connects Key Largo to Key West by 42 bridges. Travelers are treated to views of coral and limestone islets and blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico.

6. Hāna Highway, Hawaii

Also known as the ‘Road to Hāna,’ this 64.4-mile winding road in Maui features more than 600 curves and 50 bridges. Stretching from Paia town to Hāna, the route offers gorgeous views of beaches, rugged coastlines, cascading waterfalls, green forests, and pools. Since the route is long and winding, it is advisable to drive slow and carry medications for motion sickness.

7. Seward Highway, Alaska

Running between Seward and Anchorage, this 125-mile road traverses the scenic Kenai Peninsula. The highway winds around the Turnagain Arm, where the mountains drop into the sea, offering breathtaking views of the peaks of the Chugach Mountains, streams, and glaciers. Rather than rushing to the final destination, this drive encourages drivers to slow down and experience the beauty along the way. Travelers can also spot wildlife, including beluga whales and mountain goats.

Stretching for 130 miles, the Alabama Coastal Connection starts in Grand Bay and ends in Orange Beach. The route offers a diverse driving route that connects historic towns, beaches, and wildlife habitats. The waves from the water and wide horizon create a pleasant driving experience. The drive offers a Southern take on the classic seaside road trip.
