UCSB Reads Zine Workshop

Join UCSB Library for the third annual UCSB Reads Zine workshop, now virtual, no experience necessary! Zines (pronounced “zeens”) are self-published, DIY collections of photos and text that are printed by hand or photocopied, and independently distributed by the author or ‘zinester.’ You can learn more about zines and how they are made here.

Zines and independent publishing have a long history as tools for community and individual empowerment. Participants will learn how to make a zine and are invited to contribute pages to a group zine exploring the themes from the UCSB Reads 2021 book When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir, by Patrisse Cullors and asha bandele. In the memoir, Cullors, who is an artist and co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, describes her experience as a Black, queer woman in the United States, and how her family navigates multiple systems of violence in Los Angeles. The book provides an intersectional analysis of the Black Lives Matter movement and powerfully demonstrates the connection between history, lived experience, and the necessity for present-day activism.

Completed group zines will be available on Spotlight, UCSB Library’s digital exhibit space.

Need zine supplies? UCSB Library will mail students a zine kit! Requests for a kit can be found in the sign-up link.

The first 50 participants to register will receive a free copy of the UCSB Reads 2021 book.
