UCSB DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC PRESENTS AN EVENING OF CHAMBER MUSIC FOR PERCUSSION AND JAZZ

May 16, 2018 @ 7:30 am PDT

The UCSB Percussion and Jazz Ensembles will present an evening of chamber music for percussion and jazz on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 7:30 pm in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall. The Percussion Ensemble will perform music by seminal California percussion composer Henry Cowell (Pulse), David Hall (Escape Velocity), and an octet for mallet instruments by Blake Tyson (A Ceiling Full of Stars). Also to be performed is a Dennis DeSantis quartet for four drumset-like setups originally written for Sō Percussion (Shifty), several duets (including the Safri Duo arrangement of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee” from his opera, The Tale of Tsar Saltan) and an arrangement for percussion ensemble of the Frank Zappa classic instrumental, G Spot Tornado. Performing are Jarod Fedele, Brian Morones, Meg Cavanaugh, Dominique Cuello, Dominic DiCesare, Joey Goodman, Christine Tao, and Zac Erstad.

Also performing will be one of several of the jazz combos currently rehearsing under the umbrella of the UCSB Jazz Ensemble. Led by UCSB’s Senior Web Designer for the Office of Public Affairs & Communications, Matt Perko (drums), the ensemble will perform original music as well as standards from the jazz canon. The group includes BA Music majors Mitchell Solkov (bass), Collin McCrary (alto saxophone), and Lucas Brooker (guitar), as well as Milo Bechtloff (tenor saxophone), Reno Behnken (piano), and Kinamee Rhodes (trumpet). All members of the group perform with the larger UCSB Jazz Ensemble, which will perform its final concert of the academic year on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at 7:30 pm in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall.

Both groups are under the direction of Dr. Jon Nathan, who also teaches studio percussion and works with the UCSB Department of Theater and Dance as Music Director and as a percussionist.

Tickets: $10 general admission, $5 non-UCSB students with ID, free for UCSB students with ID and children under 12. Tickets can be purchased online at music.ucsb.edu/news/purchase-tickets or by calling the Associated Students Ticket Office at (805) 893-2064.

About the UC Santa Barbara Department of Music

From an institution that began life dedicated to training the next generation of music educators, to what is now a fully established research and professional graduate program, graduates of the UC Santa Barbara Department of Music have distinguished themselves both nationally and internationally. Many have gone on to teaching, either privately or in outstanding secondary school positions, and in more recent years, graduates have joined the faculties of major colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. A number have become widely recognized and published scholars; some are now prize-winning and frequently performed composers, while others are writing for television and film. Alumni are also establishing fine reputations as conductors of orchestras, opera, and choruses. Graduates of the instrumental programs have gone on to solo and orchestral careers with leading orchestras, and graduates of the voice program can be heard in opera companies around the world.

With over 150 events presented annually, the UC Santa Barbara Department of Music offers something for every music lover. The department boasts 26 unique performing ensembles, each with a quarterly concert calendar.
