Trail Talk: Insects – The Good, The Bad, & The Bugly with Frederique Lavoipierre
Thursday, April 19th, 6:30PM
Faulkner Gallery – Santa Barbara Public Library
40 East Anapamu St., Santa Barbara, CA

Our backcountry as well as our gardens are full of insects! What are they and what are they all doing there? Some are pollinators such as honey and native bees. Others are predators, eating the insects, mites, and other small critters that can plague plants.

Join Frederique Lavoipierre and learn which insects are beneficial and harmful as well as how to put the good guys to work in your garden. Get tips on how to manage your garden to encourage beneficial insects to share your habitat and manage pests without the use of pesticides.

Frederique is the former Director of Education for the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and the author of Garden Allies, a series for Pacific Horticulture magazine, on how to create habitat that welcomes insects and other wildlife. She also gives presentations on many aspects of sustainable landscaping, including ecological principles and practices, habitat gardens, beneficial insects, soil ecology, and on fresh-water ecology and aquatic invertebrates.

The talk is FREE and part of the ongoing Wilderness Hiking Speaker Series hosted by the Santa Barbara Public Library. The talks are the third Thursday of the month and feature topics related to hiking, backpacking, and our local natural history.

The next talk in the series is Thursday, May 17th, Hiking the John Muir Trail and other Sierra Wanderings with Curt Cragg.
