The John Muir Trail has become one of the most widely and well-known trails in the Sierra Nevada and for good reason. The epic, scenic beauty along the 220-mile stretch is unparalleled. This presentation with focus on how to prepare for a thru hike like the John Muir Trail. It will also introduce you to some lesser known thru hiking trails in the Sierra that offer uncrowded and under utilized trails that parallel the John Muir. Whether you’ve hiked the JMT or you’re thinking about it, this presentation will help you know more about what it takes and what to expect.
Curt Cragg is an avid hiker and backpacker. He hiked the John Muir Trail in 2011 to celebrate his 50th birthday. Since then he has hiked the High Sierra Trail, the lesser known Theodore Solomons Trail, and sections of the Tahoe Rim Trail. Curt is also a trail advocate in Santa Barbara County, serving on the boards of the Santa Barbara County Trails Council and Los Padres Forest Association. He has coordinated numerous volunteer trail projects throughout Santa Barbara with a special focus on Gaviota State Park, Midland School Ranch in Los Olivos, and the San Rafael Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest. In 2013 Curt, along with several other Wilderness Rangers, also began providing backpacking education to help others develop their skills to enjoy backpacking.
The talk is FREE and part of the ongoing Wilderness Hiking Speaker Series hosted by the Santa Barbara Public Library. The talks are the third Thursday of the month and feature topics related to hiking, backpacking, and our local natural history.
