May 12, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am PDT

he Santa Barbara Theatre Organ Society (SBTOS) is hosting a free event at the Arlington Theatre on Saturday, 12 May between 9 and 11 AM. The Great Theatre Pipe Organ of the Arlington will be available for the public to play, listen, see, take pictures, see the chambers, and ask questions.

Enter by either the Sola Street side door or the side door nearest the Public Market, depending upon construction activities.

This event is open to the public, who can listen, play, photograph, ask questions, and see the inner workings of the organ and its 7000 moving parts.

The theatre pipe organ differs radically from a church pipe organ. It was designed to replace the orchestra that played for silent movies. The pipe ranks sound like orchestral instruments. Movie sound effects abound: drums, chimes, cymbals whistles, tamborines, locomotive whistle, oogah horn, etc.

It also has seven real tuned percussion instruments: piano, marimba, vibraphone, chimes, xylophone, glockenspiel, and chryssoglott (also known as the celesta).
