Backcountry Adventuring: The Search for Rare & Invasive Plants in the Zaca & Jesusita Fires with the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

Free Presentation
Thursday, January 17th, 6:30PM
Faulkner Gallery – Santa Barbara Public Library
40 East Anapamu St., Santa Barbara, CA

To keep our wildlands healthy after a fire, we have to know which invasive plants we should control, which rare plants we should protect, and where there is erosion that needs addressing. When the fire covers 240,000 acres, much of it designated wilderness, this means mapping and surveying long, remote miles by foot, mule, and horse.

Join Denise Knapp, Director of Conservation and Research for Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, as she recounts the Garden’s many adventures covering nearly 300 miles of backcountry trails, roads, and firebreaks last year within Los Padres National Forest in the name of conservation.

This presentation is part of the ongoing Wilderness Hiking Speaker Series hosted by the Santa Barbara Public Library. The talks are the third Thursday of the month and feature topics related to hiking, backpacking, and our local natural history.

The next talk in series will be February 21, Backcountry Adventuring: Hiking & Backpacking on the Channel Islands.
