THE BRUBECK CIRCLE PRESENTS An evening with Derek Douget

February 23, 2018 @ 8:00 am PST

Derek Douget, a member of the Ellis Marsalis Quartet and the Director of the Heritage School of Music, finely mixes his Louisiana upbringing with his strong individualism and idiosyncratic voice. Playing the alto and soprano saxophones, Douget has performed with many notable musicians on the New Orleans scene, including the inaugural Louis Armstrong Quintet–a performing group of graduate students dedicated to teaching jazz in New Orleans area schools. Derek Douget has performed or worked with a variable who’s who in the world of jazz, including Nicolas Payton, Ellis Marsalis, Dr. John, Terence Blanchard, Allen Toussaint, Branford Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Randy Brecker, Wyclef Jean, Jason Marsalis, Kermit Ruffins, Stefon Harris and many other excellent musicians.

On February 20-23, 2018 Derek will be in Santa Barbara to work with a students from local high schools, colleges and non-profit organizations as he and his band spend quality time providing in-classroom instruction, working on charts with kids at Notes for Notes at the local Boys & Girls Clubs before capping off the week with a live performance with his quintet and friends. This collaboration is designed to inspire young jazz players, to celebrate Black History Month, and to help create the jazz audiences of the future.

Special thanks go out to the Bentson Kauth Family for supporting this unique residency. We also appreciate the support of the Santa Barbara Bowl and the many members of our Brubeck Society. Supporting music and other arts education is an important part of the Lobero’s mission, but we could not do it without the partnership of friends and funders who share our vision.
