Tending the Homescape: Traditional Ecological Worldviews in Syuxtun (Santa Barbara)

Free Online Presentation with Q&A
Thursday, May 19th, 5:30pm

What do traditional regenerative horticultural practices of indigenous California tribal members have to do with global responses to climate disruption? Join herbalist and traditional ecological knowledge practitioner Julie Cordero-Lamb as she walks you through her peoples’ “technology of relationship” as demonstrated by their ancestral approach to tending local native plant species, and the shift in worldviews about nature this approach can help foster.

Julie Cordero-Lamb is an enrolled member of the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation, based in Santa Barbara. She is the co-founder of the Chumash Maritime Association, a non-profit begun in 1996, which is dedicated to the revitalization of traditional redwood plank canoe technology and the maritime traditions of the coastal Chumash. In 2016, she founded the Syuxtun Plant Mentorship Collective, which is a group of 20 local indigenous plant knowledge keepers (mostly Chumash) that practices the collectively held traditional ecological knowledge of the coastal Chumash. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Cordero-Lamb traveled home to Santa Barbara 7-10 times annually to pass on the skills needed to follow the seasonal round of food and medicine tending and harvest. She currently resides on her farm in Western Washington state with her family.
