State Street Mile, The Fastest Mile in the West, Set for Sunday, June 4
Poston, Cridebring to defend titles; race proceeds go to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Crime Victim Emergency Fund; 1,000-plus participants expected at 18th edition; also the unofficial World Championship Dog Mile
The 18th State Street Mile on Sunday, June 4 is set to welcome 1,000-plus milers of all ages and speeds for the annual pre-summer Santa Barbara running tradition. The “Fastest Mile in the West” features a gradual downhill, point-to-point course that showcases beautiful downtown Santa Barbara. All event proceeds go directly to the District Attorney’s Victim-Witness Assistance Program’s Crime Victim Emergency Fund.
“We look forward to presenting another outstanding State Street Mile, an annual community event for all – competitive runners, new runners, families, kids and walkers as well as dogs and their owners,” said race director Megan Rheinschild.
Last year, recent UC-Santa Barbara grad Thomas Poston of Goleta and Alycia Cridebring of Davis, Calif. won close races in 3 minutes, 53 seconds and 4:23, respectively. Cridebring crushed by 10 seconds the women’s course record (held jointly by three women), leading the top four women well under the old mark. Also an event record-tying 6 men – also 2013 and 2014 – went under the coveted 4 minute mark. At the 2013 event, Michael Coe, from Oakland, ran 3:49 to set the current men’s course record, also the fastest mile recorded in California.
The crowd-pleasing Platinum Performance Dog Mile, the unofficial world championship, was also impressively fast with Brian Duff (age 39) & Kaydom (a 5-year-old Weimaraner) clocking a hard-to-believe 4:13, the fastest known human-dog mile performance ever. The previous event record was 4:15 by Josh Helton & Bro from 2015, beating Duff & Kaydom. The female human-dog winners were Mary Jones & Nala (5:17).
Race day starts at 8:00am with eight age group categories (10 & under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-plus) followed by the popular YMCA Family Fun Mile, Amputee Mile, Masters Elite Mile, HOKA ONE ONE Elite Mile, and ending with the not-to-be-missed, tail wagging fun, Platinum Performance Dog Mile, the unofficial world championship.
The 2017 guaranteed Open prize purse totals $5000 and goes 4-deep per gender ($1000, $750, $500 and $250) plus $1000 Open course record bonus (3:49 men and 4:23 women) and $100 Masters course bonus (4:11 men and 4:57 women). In addition, top 3 Masters age-graded and Amputee Mile (above and below the knee divisions) finishers will receive unique Santa Barbara-centric gift baskets.
The State Street Mile is also part of the local SBAA Grand Prix and Junior Grand Prix Series.
In addition, there will be a Finish Line Festival located on State and De La Guerra Streets with music, games and breakfast burritos as well as free face painting and massage.
Event Registration & Packet Pickup
Online registration closed on Thursday, June 1 at 11:59pm PST (go to: www.sbmile.com). On Saturday, June 3, there will be event registration and bib number pick-up available at Santa Barbara Running Company from noon to 4:00pm (downtown, 110 Anacapa Street). Also at 7:00am race day, bib number pick-up and registration starts at Pedregosa and State Streets in Santa Barbara. The race finishes at State and De La Guerra Streets.
