Solutions Journalism – AWC meeting for October

October 7, 2020 @ 5:30 am PDT

‘If it bleeds, it leads.” That may be the mantra in many newsrooms, but it’s not the entire story.
Solutions Journalism, a rigorous, evidence-based approach to reporting, goes beyond sky-is-falling headlines to showcase innovative ways people are solving serious problems.
Learn about this alternative approach to traditional journalism at the October 7 meeting of AWC-SB. Our presenters, Giana Magnoli with Noozhawk and Michelle Faust Raghavan with Solutions Journalism Network, will provide local and national examples of Solutions Journalism and help us understand how to recognize and practice this exciting form of journalism.

Bonus: This event will open with a brief but timely pre-election report on Misinformation, Disinformation & Malinformation: How does it get into our news feeds? How can we recognize it when we see it? How can we call it out so others aren’t misled.

Join us for this inspiring session that will give you tools you can use to recognize truth when you see it and discover the powerful positive stories that offer both insight and hope. Read more about Solutions Journalism in Noozhawk.

Presenters: Giana Magnoli, managing editor at Noozhawk, and Michelle Faust Raghavan, from Solutions Journalism Network will offer specific guidelines for how to identify stories and present them from a solutions journalism perspective. Join us on October 7th at 5:30PM to explore Solutions Journalism and how you can craft your stories in a way that drives positive social change.
Giana Magnoli has worked at Noozhawk.com covering Santa Barbara County news for 11 years, and moved to the South Coast after graduating from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a journalism degree. As managing editor, she guides newsroom coverage of everyday government, education and pandemic coverage, as well as investigations, special projects, and breaking news reporting. She is in the 2020-21 cohort for the Poynter-Koch Media & Journalism Fellowship, and a member of the Solutions Journalism Network. In her free time, Giana loves hiking, camping, board games, good books, and, in non-COVID-19 times, visiting family and friends around the state.

Michelle Faust Raghavan with Solutions Journalism Network collaborates with West Coast newsrooms interested in solutions journalism. She came to SJN after a decade in public media stations around the country. Most recently, Michelle covered health care policy at 89.3 KPCC Southern California Public Radio. She is passionate about mentorship and is actively involved with NPR’s Next Generation Radio project as a mentor, a trainer, and an editor.
