Stamps: Lasting Impressions of Santa Barbara

“Twelve “postage stamp” palette knife “impression paintings” represent the vast and majestic maritime adventures experienced in the Santa Barbara Channel. The dreamy landscapes depict the miles of golden sand and endless ocean that are rooted in memories and bordered by the priceless “Forever Stamp” with perforated edge and our country’s name, signifying Santa Barbara as a time-honored place and always a world-wide destination.”

Lydia Kaestner
Selenity

“I have always been entranced by the contrast between light and dark, form and space, and how our whole world is balanced by the two working together and against one another. I have found that water, both in the pool and the ocean, magnifies and shapes the light and subject in a certain tactile way that air cannot. I hope to capture moments of serene contemplation where usually there are none; to appear at home in an unnatural and yet omnipresent environment we are not inhabitants of, and yet are dearly dependent on. The strain of diving swathed in unwieldy dresses, locating the camera underwater and finding buoyancy all culminate in a surrender to the water, a stillness that opposes our natural instinct. I feel that the lack of control over the water, shifts in sunlight and tide, and inability to check the camera between dives gives these pieces a certain unpredictability that enhances their ephemeral nature. Selenity is a play on the words serenity, saline, and Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, to which the ocean is closely connected.”

Wake & Review

“‘Wake’ is the wave that spreads behind the boat and essentially represents the part that gets left behind or overlooked. Because this series explores nautical textures of phenomena that often go unnoticed or are not glorified, such as barnacles, ‘wake’ is a play on words for ‘the part that gets left behind’ and the verb ‘awaken.’The word ‘review’ references the call to action for a person to awaken and re-view the surrounding world, as well as, a review of undersea textures. ‘Wake and Review’ is a series of paintings, which highlight the content’s three-dimensional qualities and textures. It is created as a fully-formed painting on canvas paper, then cut up, reassembled in varying heights and mounted.”

A Slice of Time: Neo-Vintage Surfing Posters

“I imagined a mix of California, The Beach Boys and a remote location guided by a light used by mariners for 160 years. Through time, Point Conception became the western gateway into the channel, a spiritual place for the Chumash, a home for keepers of a lighthouse lens, and a surfing mecca for the daring.”
