Sequoias of the Sea Screening at SBMM Explores the Disappearance of California’s Kelp Forests

October 8 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm PDT

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) is proud to host a special screening of Sequoias of the Sea on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. This powerful new documentary dives into the urgent environmental crisis of disappearing kelp forests along the Northern California coast and the local communities fighting for their survival.

With visually stunning cinematography and heartfelt storytelling, Sequoias of the Sea documents the ecological, cultural, and economic upheaval in a coastal town where the once-thriving kelp forest has vanished. The film explores the far-reaching impacts on fishermen, Indigenous communities, and scientists as they unite to restore this critical underwater habitat in the face of climate change.

Logline: When a vital kelp forest vanishes, a coastal town’s fragile ecosystem, ancient traditions, and livelihoods crumble, forcing a desperate fight for restoration in the face of climate change.

“Kelp forests are often called the ‘redwoods of the sea’ for good reason,” said SBMM Curator Emily Falke. “They are towering giants of the underwater world that support marine biodiversity, sequester carbon, and protect coastlines. This film sheds light on what’s at stake—and who’s stepping up to help.”

Produced and co-directed by Natasha Benjamin, a marine scientist and ocean advocate, and Ana Blanco, executive director of the International Ocean Film Festival, the film is executive produced by renowned journalist and ocean champion David Helvarg. Through their work, the team brings together stories of climate resilience, Indigenous leadership, and grassroots action.

“More than a documentary, Sequoias of the Sea is a powerful and urgent story of ecological loss and community resilience. It’s a must-watch for anyone who cares about the ocean and climate recovery,” said Director, Inland Ocean Coalition Vicki Nichols Golstein.
