SB Seniors to Relive Heyday During Roaring ’20s Prom

June 1, 2017 @ 3:00 am PDT

A group of local seniors will get the chance to relive a high school rite of passage usually marked by black tie dinner jackets and extravagant evening gowns. At 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 1Valle Verde retirement community will host its third annual “senior” prom, with 75 older adults from the community’s assisted living, skilled nursing and dementia care levels of living.

The theme of this year’s event is The Roaring ‘20s. Ladies will be dressed to the nines as flappers and gentlemen will be doing their best Jay Gatsby renditions. In line with tradition, two lucky attendees will be crowned king and queen. The occasion will also feature live music from Jazz Plus, a local Dixieland, Blues and Swing band whose members are all seniors.

Various local businesses have pitched in to make sure the event is as memorable as possible by donating vintage formal wear, corsages and boutonnieres. Students from Santa Barbara City College Cosmetology Academy will be on site for hair and make-up, ensuring attendees are dolled up to the max.

Valle Verde is committed to creating an environment where unique and spontaneous daily interactions can take place. Events like the senior prom generate enthusiasm. The prom also brings the Santa Barbara community together through meaningful acts of service, while promoting human health. Research shows that social activities like this can improve quality of life.

Would you like to join this group of seniors during their special occasion? They’d love the opportunity to show you up on the dance floor. If interested, please contact me, Mike Achoki, at machoki@glynndevins.com or 913-317-2268.

Valle Verde is located at 900 Calle de los Amigos in Santa Barbara.
