Santa Barbara Science Salon: “The Myths of Vaccination and Psychology of Antivaccination” ~ Dr. Detar

July 28, 2019 @ 3:00 am PDT

The purpose of these salons is to build community around rational inquiry, scientific reasoning, and an informed discussion of science and humanistic philosophy. This is something a little different than a traditional speaker event or social group, but mirrors the tradition of the Enlightenment salons, where men and women got together for intellectual stimulation followed by discussion and libations. It’s a place for conversation about the most important issues of the day in science, philosophy, history, and the humanities. The events are sponsored by the Skeptic’s society and Santa Barbara Humanist Society.

Topic of this event: Myths of Vaccination and Psychology of Antivaccination
Despite scientific consensus that vaccines are effective and safe, there’s a growing trend of parents choosing not to vaccinate their children. Anti-vaccination myths are certainly contributing to this trend. What are they and what does the science say? What are the psychological factors contributing to Antivaccination? What can be done to improve the situation?
