Santa Barbara High School Theater Department is excited to announce their production of The Breakfast Club this Fall. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the classic 80s movie, and SBHS Theater is thrilled to bring it to life on stage.
The Breakfast Club tells the story of five high school students from different walks of life that endure a Saturday detention under a power-hungry principal. The disparate group includes rebel John, princess Claire, outcast Allison, brainy Brian and Andrew, the jock. Each has a chance to tell his or her story, making the others see them a little differently — and when the day ends, they question whether school will ever be the same.
SBHS Theater has adapted the screenplay by John Hughes to create an original theatrical version of this much loved high school drama. Bringing the iconic characters to life on the stage for this generation to enjoy. The gang is all here at Saturday detention to learn a little something about themselves and each other. This version will include all the moments fans of the movie want to see, specially designed to work for theater. Additionally there are 18 cast members who will perform the show as a rolling cast. Every performance will feature. New grouping of actors which adds to the freshness and excitement!
Director and SBHS Theater Department Head Gioia Marchese says, “I chose this play to highlight the group of students I have this year and to do something that would be fun for them and the whole community. Most of the themes are universal and the students can relate to the issues their characters are dealing with. It’s been so much fun for me to revisit this time period and find ways to bring it to life on the stage.”
