Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society Open House

October 6, 2019 @ 1:00 am PDT

October is Family History Month and the Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society is celebrating with an Open House at the Sahyun Genealogical Library on Sunday, October 6th from 1 PM to 4 PM. There will also be a month of genealogy classes and workshops — free for members and a small donation for non-members.

On Sunday visitors can: tour the library at 316 Castillo Street, Santa Barbara; enjoy free Use of computers and subscription sites; connect with Special Interest Groups including ethic, lineage, DNA etc. and get help getting started on your family history while enjoying refreshments and anniversary cake.

The Sahyun Library is a non-lending research library open to the public. The Library houses the largest collection of genealogically related materials on the central coast and contains over 15,000 genealogically related items including Santa Barbara County school yearbooks and a large collection of newsletters and journals from many genealogical societies all over the United States, Canada, Australia, Great Britain and other countries.

The Society has been around since 1972 when a couple of founding members placed an ad looking for others who might be searching for their ancestral roots. The response to that ad was the start of the SBCGS. In 1998 Dr. Melville Sahyun donated his Laboratory (Where Visine™ was invented) which has become the core of the current library and the Society has grown to over 600 members.

For a schedule of Family History Month classes go to sbgen.org .

There will also be an art show at the Sahyun with art from SB County school children, all about parents and grandparents titled, “Family Matters”
