Greetings, Santa Barbara Black Culture House supporters!
It’s Darrell and Sally back for another Black History Month season of programming. It’s been a while since we last made contact. We’re looking forward to engaging you all once again!
We are launching this season’s events under the theme “!00 Years of Black History Month,” commemorating educator Carter G. Woodson’s efforts to institutionalize “Black History Week” on February 7, 1926, which was later expanded to Black History Month in 1976. Culture House will also have a specially curated display in the main lobby of the Santa Barbara Public Library starting February 1st.
Our first event will also be on Sunday, February 1, when Santa Barbara Black Culture House presents a FREE screening at the Library’s Faulkner Gallery Space of Taylor Hackford’s “Hail! Hail! Rock ‘N Roll,” a documentary about one of the cornerstones of rock ‘n roll music: Chuck Berry.
Mr. Berry would have been 100 years old on October 18, 2026, and to celebrate, Culture House will screen Santa Barbara High School 1963 alum Hackford’s revealing film, based around a 60th birthday concert tribute to the icon, which featured a gathering of stars including Eric Clapton, Linda Ronstadt, Etta James, Robert Cray, Julian Lennon, and led by The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards, at The Fox Theatre in Berry’s native St. Louis, MO.
Following the film, Darrell, SBBCH co-founder, will lead a Q&A on Chuck Berry, his life, his music, and his legacy.
SB Black Culture House’s FREE screening of “Chuck Berry: Hail! Hail! Rock ‘N Roll” will be in the Faulkner Gallery at Santa Barbara Public Library on Sunday, 1PM, February 1, 2026.
Santa Barbara Black Culture House will announce its full roster of programming on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 19).
We look forward to seeing you all there!
