In the month of December the Santa Barbara Lawn Bowls Club is celebrating their 80th anniversary with an open house to kick-off SBLBC night bowling on Tuesday, December 5 at 6:00 p.m. The event will introduce area visitors and residents their new night bowls schedule for the upcoming year and an opportunity to experience a sample of the art of lawn bowling.
Downtown business people and residents are welcome to join the SBLBC members at Spencer Adams Park, 1216 De la Vina Street to experience an evening of fun night bowling, learn about the history of SBLBC, and enjoy a meet and greet with area corporate and city resident member players. Interested individual and team players are welcome to attend and enjoy a throw session with SBLBC award winning members.
Bud Viard, Past President is not only a great lawn bowls coach, but can share volumes on the history of the SBLBC and lawn bowling in general. Bud along with fellow board members including Scott Coons and Max Mickey have put great energy, time and effort into creating a well lit bowling green for evening bowlers who work in the downtown area, are looking for an after work recreation, and appreciate the convenience of the club location.
Member corporate guests who enjoy an evening of lawn bowls are welcome to bring dinner and beverages to enjoy in the clubhouse during or following play. Central Coast Home Health & Hospice employees recently enjoyed a Mexican dinner with club members following their team play. “My medical professionals and myself know the importance for everyone to sit less, move more, and exercise in the fresh air with friends, and we are glad to support SBLBC,” said Jerry Jordano, partner CCHH.
SBLBC has been co-sponsored by the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department since its inception and Jill Zachary, Director of Parks and Recreation, has taken lessons in the fine art of lawn bowls from club members. “I have admiration for the hard work the SBLBC members have done to contribute recreation in downtown Santa Barbara through the sport of lawn bowls” said Zachary during her speech at the clubs 80th anniversary luncheon.
A business card drawing for a SBLBC gift certificate will be held during the open house and will offer a lucky winner 80 days of free lawn bowls at the club. The historic Santa Barbara bowls club was built in 1956 through a generous donation of club member Spencer Adams, a retired attorney who came to Santa Barbara from Chicago, and offers members changing facilities, a party lanai and a relaxing club room for meetings and refreshments.
