New One-Hour Program Explains Basics of Alzheimer’s and Dementia

November 13, 2018 @ 2:00 am - 3:00 am PST

Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. It is a progressive and fatal brain disease that is the most common form of dementia.

In the United States alone, more than 5 million individuals are living with Alzheimer’s and 16 million are serving as their unpaid caregivers. The disease is a global crisis that impacts numerous families right here in our community. However, no one has to face this disease alone or without information.

The Alzheimer’s Association® has created an education program covering the basics of Alzheimer’s and dementia to provide a general overview for people who are facing a diagnosis as well as those who wish to be informed.

To help people age well, the Alzheimer’s Association® in partnership with the City of Santa Maria Recreation & Parks Department is offering the Understanding Alzheimer’s and dementia program on Tuesday, November 13  from 2:00 to 3:00 pm.  The course will be held at the Elwin Mussell Senior Center, 510 Park Ave, Santa Maria, CA.   Call (800) 272-3900 to register in advance.  Seating is limited. The free one-hour Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia program:

●       Explores the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

●       Examines what happens in a brain affected by Alzheimer’s.

●       Details the risk factors for and three general stages of the disease.

●       Identifies FDA-approved treatments available to treat some symptoms.

●       Looks ahead to what’s on the horizon for Alzheimer’s research.

The Alzheimer’s Association is the premier source of information and support for the five million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease. Through its national network of chapters, it offers a broad range of programs and services for people with the disease, their families and caregivers and represents their interests on Alzheimer’s-related issues before federal, state and local government and with health and long term care providers.
