MCASB Presents “DJ Javier: San Milano Drive”

October 5 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm PDT
Free

Join MCASB for the opening celebration of San Milano Drive, the debut solo museum exhibition by Santa Barbara-based Filipino-American artist DJ Javier. This vibrant and immersive exhibition highlights Javier’s Filipino passion for his Filipino heritage and history, his hometown, and contemporary surf culture through large-scale paintings, hand-painted murals, sculptures, interactive installations, and more.

Sculptures of varying scales and with interactive elements permeate the MCASB galleries. Highlights include:

San Milano Sari-Sari, a faux-storefront featuring a community marketplace of local artists, Javier’s personal brands, and exclusive MCASB x DJ Javier merchandise, including a limited edition risograph by Bird in Hand Press.

Nipa Hut,  a large-scale sculpture with colorful hand-painted elements, reimagines a communal gathering space found in many Filipino homes.

Tricycle, referencing everyday transportation in the Philippines, was built by Alex of Boom Boom Bike Room and features custom graphics.

Videoke Machine, a hybrid installation combining videos, digital animations of Javier’s signature artworks, paintings, and a working karaoke machine, which will be regularly activated during free monthly karaoke nights as well as for every day visitors.
