Singer-songwriter and power-pop pioneer Marshall Crenshaw arrives at SOhO Restaurant & Music Club on Wednesday, April 8 for a night of timeless rock & roll craftsmanship alongside longtime collaborator and multi-instrumentalist James Mastro. Known for his crisp melodies, sharp guitar work, and emotionally resonant songwriting, Crenshaw delivers performances that feel both nostalgic and immediate, grounded in tradition yet alive with the spirit of modern rock storytelling.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Crenshaw discovered music early, learning to tune a guitar at age ten and steadily shaping the melodic sensibility that would define his career. His first major break came in 1978 portraying John Lennon in the hit stage production Beatlemania, before relocating to New York City and immersing himself in the city’s vibrant rock scene. It was there that he recorded his now-classic single “Someday, Someway,” a song that climbed into the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has since surpassed 8 million streams on Spotify, cementing its place as one of the defining power-pop anthems of the early 1980s. The success of the track launched a career that has spanned more than four decades, 13 studio albums, and countless live performances rooted in melody, sincerity, and enduring musicianship.
Over the years, Crenshaw has earned Grammy and Golden Globe nominations, appeared in film and television, including his celebrated portrayal of Buddy Holly in La Bamba, and built a loyal following drawn to the clarity and emotional resonance of his music. His catalog remains a touchstone for fans of classic American rock, blending hooks, heart, and storytelling into songs that feel both familiar and freshly alive on stage.
Joining Crenshaw for the evening is James Mastro, a seasoned guitarist, songwriter, and producer whose musical resume spans decades of influential work. Best known for his role in the seminal power-pop band The Bongos, Mastro has collaborated with artists across the rock and alternative spectrum while developing a reputation as a versatile performer and musical architect. Together, Crenshaw and Mastro create a dynamic live experience shaped by chemistry, musicianship, and a shared reverence for the craft of songwriting.
