Marine Debris Art Workshop for Teachers

November 13, 2017 @ 4:30 am PST

Santa Barbara: Teachers can learn how to integrate marine debris and plastic pollution solutions into their STEAM lessons in a free art workshop with Patrick Chandler of Washed Ashore and Explore Ecology on Monday, November 13th, at 4:30 pm.

Held at the Watershed Resource Center at Arroyo Burro Beach, the workshop will introduce teachers to Washed Ashore’s Integrated Arts Marine Debris Curriculum (IAMDC) which combines art and science to help students understand plastic marine debris and communicate about this issue using the language of the arts. Designed to inspire and guide educators in bringing the issues of marine debris and plastic pollution into their classrooms, the IAMDC offers innovative ways to discuss these issues and teach through the arts.

Washed Ashore is a nonprofit based in Oregon that creates aesthetically powerful art to educate about plastic pollution in our oceans. Over the past seven years, Washed Ashore has processed tons of plastic pollution from Pacific beaches to create large scale art installations that awaken viewers to the global marine debris crisis. Patrick Chandler, Education Consultant from Washed Ashore, has ten years’ experience working in and developing environmental education, stewardship and science programs.

Explore Ecology’s programs empower the next generation of environmental stewards through hands on lessons in 35 school gardens, field trips to the Watershed Resource Center and Art From Scrap Creative Reuse Store, in-class water quality and composting lessons (yes, with worms!), summer camps, and more. Explore Ecology also manages California Coastal Clean Up Day in Santa Barbara County and leads community and student beach clean ups multiple times each month. In all, Explore Ecology’s programs reach 30,000 Santa Barbara County students as a part of their school day each year connecting them to their environment and their food.

The Integrated Arts Marine Debris Curriculum was created with the support of NOAA. For more information on IAMDC please visit: http://washedashore.org/iamdc/.

Drinks and a complimentary dinner will be served.
