Non-Profit Los Alamos Valley Men’s Club Introduces 2019 “Los Alamos Valley Old Days” Grand Marshals, Sheila Glaser and John Traller; Festival Scheduled for September 27-29, 2019

2019 Marks 73rd Los Alamos Valley Men’s Club Anniversary Celebrating 58 Years of Los Alamos Old Days, the Town’s Annual Showcase of History through Frontier Family Fun

Friday through Sunday, September 27-29, 2019, Los Alamos, California – the historical stagecoach route stop which continues to welcome off-ramp travelers with its elevated foodie offerings, veritable rainbow selection of wine and beer tasting options, and stylish lodging – will celebrate its Old West background and allure with the town’s annual Los Alamos Valley Old Days festival. Presiding over the 2019 event weekend, which carries the theme of “Celebrating Old Days, Blazing New Trails”, are this year’s Los Alamos Old Days Grand Marshals, Sheila Glaser and John Traller.

Sheila’s Los Alamos roots stretch back to 1993, when she moved to the California Central Coast town with her family. She has been heavily involved in the community ever since, helping with activities for the local school, PTO and Site Council, and the Los Alamos Valley Senior Center. In 1996, Sheila joined the Los Alamos Valley Men’s Club (“LAVMC”), where she has served on, or chaired, various event and other initiative committees such as the “Raise the Roof Committee”, the new tables and chairs committee, Santa Ynez Valley Youth Recreation “Queen’s Events”, Old Days Peddlers’ Mart, Cook Your Own, holiday events, Bingo, and Christmas for the Kids. Sheila has served as the LAVMC Secretary and Vice President, the latter of which is a post that she continues to hold. Sheila still resides in Los Alamos, with her husband of 43 years.

“My heart has belonged to the Men’s Club for more than two decades. I’ve handed out Thanksgiving baskets…worked anywhere that I was needed. It’s taken a lot of effort and dedication, but it’s also lots of fun,” said Sheila Glaser, 2019 Los Alamos Old Days Grand Marshal, along with John Traller.

Sheila continued, “John has been my right-hand man through all of my years as Vice President of the Club. I’m honored to have been nominated as this year’s Grand Marshal, alongside John.”

John Traller is a Korean War veteran who left home in 1949, at the age of 16. He moved to Los Alamos with his wife Cathy, in 2004, after a 50-year career as a tax CPA which included 20 years teaching federal taxation at UCSB. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from UCLA, and a Master’s degree from USC. Although most of his professional life has involved tax accounting, John has a passion for old and classic cars, and for dancing – he taught dancing with Arthur Murray, in the 1950s. He is a Past President of Kiwanis (Ventura), Rotary (Santa Ynez Valley), and the California CPA Society (Tri-Counties). John is also a Past Board Member of the LAVMC, and when he served as Treasurer of the Club he was instrumental in solidifying the LAVMC’s fundraising efforts by securing the Club’s philanthropic §501(c)(3) tax exempt status. John currently edits the Men’s Club Monthly Newsletter.

John added, “Old Days is the Club’s biggest annual fundraiser. It’s a time for celebration, but also for reflection on our previous year’s efforts. We hope that visitors enjoy the festivities as much as we do, and that they return to celebrate with us every year.”

The 2019 edition of Los Alamos Old Days will pave the way for spotlights on the western-style town’s progression, and on its attractions and activities for all ages. Overall Los Alamos Valley Old Days admission is free, with paid portions of the weekend benefitting a variety of local organizations and the all-volunteer, philanthropic Los Alamos Valley Men’s Club, which sponsors, coordinates and hosts the annual event. Visitors revel alongside Los Alamos residents as they honor, preserve and celebrate the town’s authentic Western heritage. Santa Ynez Valley locals and tourists alike, will delight in the weekend’s mix of family-friendly and slightly more adult fun.

Los Alamos is located at the intersection of US Highway 101 and State Route 135 (Los Alamos’ main thoroughfare of Bell Street), just an hour north of Santa Barbara and 20 minutes south of Santa Maria, in the heart of Santa Barbara County’s ranch, farm and wine country.
