Learn Fishing Tips This Sunday at Goleta Beach Pier

July 17, 2022 @ 11:00 am PDT

Subsistence fishing, or angling to provide fish for personal or family consumption, is a popular activity on the South Coast with many community members receiving nutritional, social, and cultural benefits from coastal resources.

On Sunday, July 17th from 11 am to 3 pm at Goleta Beach Pier, community members interested in subsistence fishing will have an opportunity to learn rod and reel fishing tips from recreational angler Captain David Bacon and gain insights about local marine protected areas (MPAs).

This is a free, bilingual event that brings together members of the fishing community, MPA stakeholders, and ocean stewards for an afternoon of knowledge sharing, networking, and discussions. It is hosted by the Santa Barbara Channel MPA Collaborative and MPA Collaborative Network.

In addition to learning fishing tips, participants can explore informational booths provided by MPA Collaborative Network/Santa Barbara Channel MPA Collaborative, California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) MPA team, CDFW Law Enforcement Division, Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, Surfrider Santa Barbara Ocean Friendly Restaurants, NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, NOAA Fisheries, Explore Ecology, and others.

The first 40 participants will receive a free fishing rod, reel, line, Sabiki, and weight.
