Kids Draw Architecture: Sketch Your Communities – Free Art Event

June 2, 2021 @ 4:00 am PDT

By Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara

The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara (AFSB) is pleased to announce this year’s Kids Draw Architecture (KDA) – Sketch Your Communities free event. Every year, KDA brings children and architects together to sketch important Santa Barbara buildings. This activity helps kids learn about architecture and the skill of drawing while working alongside volunteer professional mentors.

This year with Sketch Your Communities, we are putting out the call again for young artists to pick up their pencil and paper and connect creatively with their communities. We are asking artists as they draw architecture to expand their view; to look at public buildings in Santa Barbara that may be near where they live or another building, they may have seen and especially like.

Two drawings can be submitted per artist by June 2, 2021.
Email them to info@afsb.org.
Mail or drop them off at our office 229 E. Victoria Street.
Drawings submitted will be considered for our annual KDA 2022 calendar.

The AFSB website is a great source of inspiration, tips, and even tutorials. This year we had the privilege to work with Santa Barbara native, now working and living in Los Angeles, illustrator and designer Abi Savage. She created a quick but fun “How to Draw” video where she explains step by step on how she drew the Samitaur Tower by Eric Owen Moss in Los Angeles.

Founded in 1988 by AFSB’s Cassandra Ensberg, FAIA, the Kids Draw Architecture (KDA) program was developed for the community to increase awareness of architecture and design excellence in the built environment. Throughout its rich history, KDA brings together professional architects, designers, and artists to sketch our beloved landmarks.

The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara has been dedicated to expanding our community’s appreciation of the built environment since 1983. The AFSB Gallery is located in the historic Acheson House at the corner of Garden and East Victoria Streets in Santa Barbara. Regular gallery hours are Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and weekdays by appointment.
