Joseph Goldyne: Fall Light

September 7, 2017 @ 5:00 am - 8:00 am PDT

In a special companion exhibition to a suite of paintings by Tonalist painter Leon Dabo, Sullivan Goss will present an exquisite and sublime exhibition of new waterfall paintings by internationally known artist Joseph Goldyne. This exhibition follows on the enormous success and popularity of Goldyne’s Waterfalls exhibition of 2012 with a range of new paintings in new sizes and formats.

Over the course of a long career, Joseph has made an exceedingly wide variety of work. His earliest works were monoprints that skipped across both time and geography to conjoin ideas and iconography in new and suggestive ways. The exercise was never postmodern. Rather, Joseph was exploring how various visual ideas had been worked out by artists of previous generations by making new works of art. He refined his drawing, his printmaking, and eventually his painting as he dealt in new metaphors and new treatments with old ideas or images. The waterfall series, on the other hand, is the longest lived of his life. He has been working on this “series” for the last twelve years, even as he has worked in parallel on other projects.

Joseph Goldyne earned a BA in Art History from UC Berkeley before completing his MD at UC San Francisco and his MFA at Harvard University. He has devoted himself to the art world since his twenties, painting exhibitions for galleries like Braunstein Quay and John Berggruen and advising the Fine Arts Museums Collections Committee for over 30 years. Joseph’s work is held in the permanent collections of institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Fine Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among many others.

Come to the opening. Visit, explore, collect! 1st Thursday, September 7, 2017  from 5 - 8pm.
