The Santa Barbara Jazz Society is pleased to present jazz vocalist Janis Mann and her trio on Sunday, November 19 from 1 to 4pm at SOhO. Award-winning vocalist Mann is described by critic Andrew Gilbert as “brilliant” and by critic Don Heckman as “one of the Southland’s finest jazz vocal artists.” Her warm alto voice imbues each choice song she sings with cool but concentrated emotion.

At once both a striking song stylist and a fearless improviser, Janis Mann is that rare artist who can sweep you way with her captivating sound. She is a true jazz singer in the manner of Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, and Shirley Horn, yet with a sound all her own. An exciting and engaging performer, Mann’s rich timbre, flexibility, and range often invites comparison to Sarah Vaughn.

In addition to working with the great Kenny Werner on two outstanding recording projects, Janis has performed with Diane Schurr, Roy Haynes, Terrell Stafford, Dave Frishberg, Jack Sheldon, John Clayton, Eric Reed, Roberta Gambarini, and other jazz luminaries. Based in Los Angels, she performs often in New York notably at the Blue Note and the Kitano. Backing up Janis for this Santa Barbara concert are three of LA’s finest musicians: Daniel Szado on piano, bassist John B. Williams, and drummer Roy McCurdy.

Admission to the concert is $15 for Jazz Society members, $25 for non-members, $7 for local jazz musicians with membership, and $5 for full-time students. Tickets are available ONLY at the door and doors open at 12:30. Jazz Society members will be admitted first and seating is limited so plan to arrive early. Please join us for an afternoon of exciting jazz. For more information please call 805-687-7123 or visit our website sbjazz.org
