Into the Woods at ETC!

August 16, 2019 @ 7:00 am - August 18, 2019 @ 7:00 am PDT

Ensemble Theatre Company (ETC) is proud to announce the first production of its newly expanded Young Actors Conservatory program. Under the direction of award-winning actor Brian McDonald, 16 students from Santa Barbara County will present four public performances of Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical Into the Woods on August 16, 17 and 18.

“Having the opportunity to kick off ETC’s first youth production with Into the Woods is such a thrill for me,” says McDonald, ETC’s first full-time Director of Education and Outreach. “Thanks to the support from local individuals and foundations, we were able to increase our outreach efforts and assemble a cast of local young performers whose creative passion and erudite performances are an absolute must-see experience.”

Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted on Broadway in 1987 and ran for 764 performances, garnering many awards during its initial Broadway run, including “Best Actress in A Musical,” and “Best Original Book and Score.” The show has spawned numerous national tours and revivals and remains one of the American theater’s best-loved musicals.

The main characters come from the classic fairytales Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and The Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood, and are tied together by an original story that involves The Baker and his Wife and their quest to begin a family. While everyone is familiar with the traditional fairytales’ “happily ever after” endings, this musical further follows these stories to explore the consequences of each character’s wish and quest.

The production will feature an eight-piece ensemble with musical direction by JP Douglas, scenic design by Richard Croy, lighting design by Liam Strong, costume design by Abra Flores and sound design by Kenny Hobbs. Into the Woods marks ETC’s first youth production at ETC’s home, The New Vic.

The cast of Into the Woods will feature Christian Edward Duarte as The Baker, Stephanie Brown as Baker’s Wife, Hunter Hawkins as The Witch, McKenna Gemberling as Cinderella, Cassidy Broderick as Little Red, Jacob Lauderdale as Narrator/Mysterious Man, Henry Challen as Jack, Chris Carmona as Cinderella’s Prince/Wolf, Kaitlyn Diffenderfer as Rapunzel, Blake Brundy as Rapunzel’s Prince/Stewart, Grace Wenzel as Jack’s Mother, Jackie Thompson as Cinderella’s Stepmother, Morgan Johnson as Cinderella’s Father/Voice of the Giant, Phoebe Appel as Florinda/Granny, Miranda Ortega as Lucinda, and Beau Glaizer as Cinderella’s Mother.

Into the Woods will perform at The New Vic which is located at 33 West Victoria Street, Santa Barbara, and runs August 16 through 18, 2019 on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7pm with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm. Advance ticket prices are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and children 12-and-under. Tickets purchased at the door on the day of the performance are subject to a $5 increase per ticket. Reservations are recommended and may be made online atwww.etcsb.org, by calling ETC box office at 805.965.5400, or in person at the box office between the hours of 1pm and 5pm Tuesday through Saturday.
