Human-Caused Climate Change and Solutions in the Channel Islands

July 29, 2021 @ 7:00 am PDT

Dr. Patrick Gonzalez, Principal Climate Change Scientist of the U.S. National Park Service, will discuss how greenhouse gas emissions from cars, power plants, deforestation and other human sources have caused anthropogenic climate change in the Channel Islands and across Southern California. Observed impacts include increased temperatures over land and in ocean waters, increased wildfire, drought, sea level rise, and ocean acidification.

Patrick will also touch on how continued climate change increases future risks of invasive plant species and vegetation shifts. Energy conservation, renewable energy, public transit, and other actions could cut carbon emissions and reduce risks to the Channel Islands ecosystems. This is sure to be an exciting discussion and one that will also include a 15-minute Q&A presented by Channel Islands Restoration and Dr. Gonzalez.
