Help the City of Goleta Break Ground on the Goleta Valley Community Center Athletic Field

The City of Goleta is renovating the athletic field behind the Goleta Valley Community Center and adjacent to the Boys and Girls Club. The community is invited to a groundbreaking with City Council and City staff on Wednesday, June 19, at 2:30 p.m. Children are encouraged to attend.

“I am so pleased to see all of the recreation opportunities coming to Old Town,” said Mayor Paula Perotte. “The opening of the Jonny D. Wallis Neighborhood Park at the end of March was a highlight for the area and the entire community. And now there will be another great place for children and families to play.”

In 2017, the City received a Housing Related Parks Program grant from the State of California’s Department of Housing and Community Development providing the opportunity to renovate this field. It has been heavily utilized by the community for decades and is in need of renovation. This grant will allow the City to make improvements, add new amenities, and create a place for children and families to play. Prior to the completion of the Jonny D. Wallis Neighborhood Park in Old Town earlier this year, this athletic field was the only open grass area for children and families in this part of Goleta to use, since there are no nearby schools.

The City is excited to improve this recreation space for the entire community, the hundreds of children who attend the Goleta Boys and Girls Club each day, and those who use the Goleta Valley Community Center. This project includes new turf with gopher mesh for the field, new irrigation, a walking path and a fitness station. It is anticipated to be completed before the end of summer.
