Guinness World Record Attempt: Largest Backwards Walk

On June 2nd, the whole community is invited to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the State Street Mile and to have a lot of fun by participating in an officially sanctioned Guinness World Record attempt for the “Largest Backwards Walk.” The current record is 1,107 people, which was set in India in 2014. So bring your friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, and teammates to set the new World Record in Santa Barbara.
The World Record attempt is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am on Sunday, June 2nd, at the corner of State and De la Guerra Streets in Santa Barbara (the finish line for the State Street Mile Races). Parking is available at Santa Barbara City Parking Lots 9 and 10 (Anacapa/Canon Perdido, Anacapa/Ortega). Carpooling and alternative transportation to and from the event is encouraged.
This is NOT a race. No special skills are required. Participants will walk backwards for one kilometer (about 7 blocks) up State Street. There is only ONE RULE: everyone must walk the whole course backwards (walking forward, sideways, and twirling will get you – and maybe the whole record attempt – disqualified). The event is suitable for any age as long as you are dedicated to walking backwards the entire way.
Pre-registration online at SBMile.com is encouraged. Same day registration for the World Record attempt will begin at 9:30 am at State and De la Guerra Streets in Santa Barbara. Registration for the event is $5 per person, or FREE for anyone participating in any of the State Street Mile Races. All proceeds from the event go to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Crime Victim Emergency Fund.
