Gaviota to Guadalupe Trail Study Public Meeting

A public workshop will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 6 pm, Dick DeWees Community and Senior Center, 1120 West Ocean Avenue, Lompoc, CA, to review preliminary findings and hear from community members regarding the Northern Santa Barbara County Interim California Coastal Trail Study (Gaviota to Guadalupe Trail Study).
The California Coastal Act of 1972 included creation of a continuous coastal trail. Once completed, the California Coastal Trail (CCT) will extend 1,200 miles from the Oregon to Mexican borders. Statewide, approximately 50% of the trail has been completed. While progress is being made on the CCT in southern Santa Barbara County, little trail planning progress has occurred in the northern part of the county due to the large expanse of private rangeland and Vandenberg Air Force Base lining most of the north county coastline.
The absence of a planned trail between Gaviota and the San Luis Obispo County line has stymied access to the CCT from the northern part of Santa Barbara County. To address this, the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) has initiated a study to engage the public in planning for a continuous interim CCT that utilizes existing road right of way and public lands and identifies spurs to access coastal locations such as Point Sal, Jalama and other locations.
SBCAG has contracted with the Santa Barbara County Trails Council (Trails Council) to prepare the study. The Trails Council will hold a public workshop on May 29 at 6 pm to share preliminary findings and listen to community members’ ideas and preferences. This is the first of several public meeting to be held as the study progresses.
