Friends of Orphans

October 29, 2019 @ 6:00 am - 7:30 am PDT

Ricky Anywar is founder of the Ugandan organization Friends of Orphans (FRO). His story is the basis for the book Soldier Boy, by Keely Hutton. Ricky was abducted at age fourteen from his village in 1989 by Joseph Kony’s infamous Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda. Over 60,000 children were abducted during the 20 year war.

Ricky became one of the thousands of boys and girls who were conscripted to kill and destroy for Kony. Ricky escaped, was recaptured when he went back to his village, and then left the area after his second escape. Several years later, he went back to northern Uganda to start an orphanage to provide a home, education, vocational training for children and young people affected by this war, and psychological counseling / healing for the many who are suffering from PTSD.

Friends of Orphans’ outcomes have had long-term positive impact with broad ramifications. These include increased economic opportunities for the youth and particularly women. FRO creates jobs, teaches farming which increases crop yields, teaches better diet and nutrition, increases income for participants, and provides increased access to healthcare and schooling.

Hear Ricky tell his story firsthand, and learn about his work. This fundraiser is free and open to everyone to attend; donations are welcome but not mandatory.
