Eyes of Another Art Show

November 10, 2017 @ 5:30 am PST

The Arts Fund is excited to announce the opening of Eyes of Another, curated by Rosemarie Gebhart and Marcello Ricci. A reception will be held at The Arts Fund Gallery on Friday, November 10th from 5-8pm during the Funk Zone Art Walk. The exhibition will feature work by Pamela Benham, Lety Garcia, Diane Giles, Holli Harmon, Ruth Ellen Hoag, Cynthia Martin, and Maria Miller.

Eyes of Another asks contemporary artists in Santa Barbara to take us on a journey of discovery as they paint what they see, paint what they feel, and paint what is real to them. Many of their names are familiar, some are new, but each one creates new discoveries and new meaning to their work. The artists in this show reinterpret the Santa Barbara scene by allowing us to see with New Eyes, that which we have seen a hundred times, but maybe have walked on by. Their creativity, by using a variety of techniques, allows us to visualize and appreciate an urban scene fast disappearing, a landscape eroding before our very eyes brought by environmental changes, changes within our own interior worlds captured by an abstraction of senses. Did these artists’ answer the question art is not what you see, but did we make you it see through our eyes?

“The only true voyage of discovery, the only fountain of Eternal Youth, would be not to visit strange lands but to possess other eyes, to behold the universe through the eyes of another, of a hundred others, to behold the hundred universes that each of them beholds, that each of them is;”
-Proust

Diane Giles
“My paintings are about the figure.  Rather than portraying the figure in a realistic way, I prefer to abstract it, Leaving the viewer to have a role in deciding what is seen.”

Cynthia Martin
“I am interested in how we see the familiar scenery around us, and I use metallic stripes of deconstructed color to refer to pathways, roads, contrails, and other symbols of a consumer society constantly on the go.  The hi-tech auto finish, a salute to our voracious car culture, reflects on the way we catch glimpses of the passing landscape as we pursue our busy commuter lives.”

 Maria Miller
“Breaking the rules of photography created a portal for the artistic journey Maria Miller traversed while developing her voice with a new medium: digital photo collage. Surrealism and fictional landscapes are the backdrop for her narrative illustrations. The stories she tells express the angst and the wonder of living in today’s world and society.”

Lety Garcia
“The memory of place is what I like to focus on and explore.  Whether it be a reflection of respite on an atypically uncrowded beach shore, walking by abandoned warehouses, or making a road trip stop; the place itself is not the focus – but rather the moment and interaction between people, location, and time is.  In a rapidly changing urban landscape, I am interested in the fleeting relationship between us and our urban environment that continues to evolve both due to natural causes and human decision.”

Ruth Ellen Hoag
“This work is what I do when no one is looking. It’s rarely seen outside my own studio. It’s what freely dancing, experiencing something for the first time, or being taken by a sudden memory, feels like. They are undrawn, and an expression of a moment.”

Pamela Benham
“To see my paintings with new eyes, see each color as a musical instrument playing expressively in the orchestral composition of the piece. Look for the interplay of the color’s volume, timbre, tempo, and rhythm, and how these color sounds coalesce to express the emotional themes of each painting.”

Holli Harmon
“This body of work plays with my regional explorations of our landscape.  It is truly an adventure to explore our past while projecting myself into future scenarios as our community grows and impacts our environment.”

The exhibition will be on view until Sunday, January 7, 2018 at The Arts Fund Gallery, located at 205-C Santa Barbara Street. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday-Sunday from 12-5pm. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
