Earthy Folklore: The Nature Wisdom in Ancient Tales with Craig Chalquist

Thursday, May 16th, 6:30PM
Faulkner Gallery – Santa Barbara Public Library
40 East Anapamu St., Santa Barbara, CA

We find much wisdom for how to relate to the natural world in what seems at first an unlikely source: old folklore, including myths and folk tales. When read and told with sensitivity to symbol and metaphor, we can learn valuable lessons for moving our relations with nature, place, and Earth from distance and alienation to closeness and appreciation.

Craig Chalquist, PhD. is Associate Provost of Pacifica Graduate Institute and the author of several books on the intersection of place, story, myth, land, and dream. Visit his website at www.worldrede.com.

This talk is part of the Listening to Nature mini-series presented as part of the ongoing Wilderness Hiking Speaker Series hosted by the Santa Barbara Public Library. The talks are the third Thursday of the month and feature topics related to hiking, backpacking, the outdoors, and nature.

The next two talks in the series are:

Thursday, June 20th, Tracking Nature’s Patterns: How living close to the land deepens human relationships, with members from the Quail Springs Permaculture community.

Thursday, July 18th, A Little Bird Told Me – Listening to Nature is a great way to find your place, with naturalist and “bird nerd” Dan Fontaine from Wilderness Youth Project.
