Dreams and Fantasies: chamber music for flute, cello, and piano

Cellist Karen Yeh, flutist Adriane Hill, and pianist Christopher Davis will present “Dreams and Fantasies: Chamber music for flute, cello, and piano” on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 3 p.m. in the Faulkner Gallery at the Santa Barbara Public Library (downtown location). The program will include works by Robert Schumann, Aaron Copland, Gabriel Fauré, and Heitor Villa-Lobos, as well as transcriptions of lieder by Franz Schubert, Claude Debussy, and Richard Wagner. Admission is free!

Karen Yeh is an active cellist based in Los Angeles, California. She has performed at numerous festivals, including the Meadowmount School of Music, Domaine Forget (Canada), Toronto Summer Music Festival, International Music Academy in Pilsen (Czech Republic), and Oberstdorfer Musiksommer (Germany). She has appeared in masterclasses for such distinguished artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Lynn Harrell, Colin Carr, Anner Bylsma, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Matt Haimovitz, and Janos Starker.

An avid orchestral musician, Karen served as principal of her section at Northwestern University, Indiana University, and UC Santa Barbara. She is currently on the substitute musician list for the New West Symphony, Santa Barbara Symphony, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Born on Long Island, Karen began playing piano at the age of 6 and later began cello studies at age 9. She received her Bachelor’s of Music degree at Northwestern University under the tutelage of Hans Jorgen Jensen and a Performer’s Diploma at Indiana University where she served as assistant to Janos Starker. She is a doctoral candidate at UC Santa Barbara where she studied with Jacob Braun and Jennifer Kloetzel.

Adriane Hill is a flute and piccolo player based in Santa Barbara, CA. She has been recognized as a prize-winner in state and regional competitions such as the Florida Flute Association’s College Young Artist Competition, the Mid-South Flute Festival Master Class Competition, and the University of Central Florida Concerto Competition. As a member of the Now Hear Ensemble, Adriane actively commissions and premieres new music, performing at venues such as the Center for New Music in San Francisco and the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater in Los Angeles. She has performed at the National Flute Association Convention, Marrowstone Music Festival, and the Carlsbad Music Festival. Adriane holds a Master of Music degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she studied with Jill Felber, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Central Florida, where she studied with Dr. Nora Lee Garcia. While completing her masters at UCSB, Adriane served as the Graduate Teaching Assistant for the University Wind Ensemble (under the direction of Paul Bambach) and directed the Flute Choir. Adriane began studying flute in high school, under the guidance of Bootsie K. Mayfield.

Christopher Davis has a history of accomplishments as a performer, competitor, and teacher. He has been a concerto soloist with several orchestras and has studied with renowned teachers and scholars in Germany, Austria, and Portugal. Chris completed his DMA Degree from UC Santa Barbara in 2013 and meanwhile immersed himself in the local music community. In addition to performing, he has worked for the Music Academy of the West, Camerata Pacifica, the Ojai Music Festival, Westmont College, the Performing Arts Scholarship Foundation, and the Santa Barbara Music Club. Chris is pianist at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and has released two CDs featuring his own solo piano compositions.
