Community Forum: League of Women Voters Turns 100

February 19, 2020 @ 12:00 pm PST

Community Forum: “The Untold Story of Women of Color in the League of Women Voters”
Speaker: Carolyn Jefferson-Jenkins; introduced by LWVUS President Chris Carson
Wednesday, Feb. 19, noon-2pm, followed by an Equali-Tea
Faulkner Gallery, Santa Barbara Central Library, 40 E. Anapamu Street

The League of Women Voters acknowledges that the suffrage movement did not include all women, excluding women—and men–of color. Today the League fights for the opportunity of everyone to make their voices heard and their votes count. The League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the national League by looking back—and ahead.  The speaker for the Feb. 19 Community Forum—Carolyn Jefferson-Jenkins– will help lead the way forward. She was the first black women to be President of the League of Women Voters of the United States and is the author of the book with the same title as the Forum.

LWVSB is honored to have the current League of Women Voters of the United States President, Chris Carson, introduce Jefferson-Jenkins. The program will include a multi-media presentation with groups to engage attendees, featuring slides of black suffragists. The Forum, which is co-sponsored by the Santa Barbara Public Library, is free and open to the public. It will be followed by an Equali-Tea to continue the 100th anniversary celebration. This is one of many events across the country, with the theme “Women Power the Vote.”

Simultaneous Spanish translation will be provided.  Accessible parking is available in the public garage on Anacapa Street next to the library. The forum will be livestreamed by TVSB via the League’s Facebook page and videotaped for later viewing on the League’s YouTube channel – see LWVSantaBarbara, org. If anyone needs additional access accommodation, they can calll (805) 462-7126 or send a message to president@lwvsantabarbara.org. The League does not support or oppose candidates, but does take positions on issues
