Comics, Board Games, and Storytimes Are All Part of Santa Barbara Reads

November 3, 2017 @ 6:00 am PDT

Pandemics, board games, comic crafts, and a storytime about a blackout may seem like fairly disparate topics, but this year’s Santa Barbara Reads selection, Station Eleven, is the thread that brings these all together at the Santa Barbara Public Library. These topics can be found in the SB Reads programming for kids, families, and teens.

Just like the characters of Station Eleven have their mettle tested throughout the book, teens, families, and the young at heart can test their survival skills at the Library’s various Game Night and Game Times. The community is invited to come play new and old favorites, with special thanks to Game Seeker for the bounty: try fighting infections in Pandemic or be the virus and takeover the world in Plague, Inc., build a civilization in Settlers of Catan with Traders & Barbarians and Cities & Knight expansions, or go old school and try to make it through the Oregon Trail. These games and others will be available at Central Library’s First Friday Game Night on November 3 at 6:00pm, as well as at the Montecito Library on Saturday, November 11 at 11:00am, and at the Buellton Library all day on Friday, December 1.

In Station Eleven the characters have lived through not only the pandemic, but the ensuing loss of electricity and complete blackout. While making it through a blackout may not seem as fear inspiring as a pandemic, it might not feel that way for young kids. Thankfully, there are books out there to help through these experiences, like John Rocco’s Caldecott Honor picture book Blackout. Caregivers and preschool aged children can join a number of storytimes at the Library to enjoy this story, talk about what it is like when the power goes out, and share songs and rhymes about bravery and finding community. These storytimes will be held on Wednesday, November 8 and Thursday, November 9 at the Goleta Library, on Tuesday, November 14 at the Central Library, and on Thursday, November 16 at the Carpinteria Library. All storytimes are at 10:30am.

As comics play a part in expression and motivation in Station Eleven, so, too can they serve these purposes again for teens at the Central Library’sComic Arts and Crafts event. Teens are invited to the Central Library on Tuesday, November 14 from 4:30-5:30pm to create their own comic book collages, press buttons and origami boxes using upcycled comic book art.

Community, continuance, and comics as art are all feature of this year’s Santa Barbara Reads selection and the Library hopes that kids, families, and teens can connect to these themes through the book and through these events.

Information about Santa Barbara Public Library System locations, hours, events, and program is available at SBPLibrary.org. All Library programs are free and open to the public.
