Children’s Book Launch Mermaid Dreams

August 1, 2019 @ 5:00 am PDT

Seven Seas Press is pleased to announce the book launch event for Mermaid Dreams, a children’s book by local award-winning author-illustrator team, Janet Lucy and Colleen McCarthy-Evans.

Place: Paradise Found
Date: Aug 1st 2019-First Thursday
Time: 5-7pm

The story is inspired by a little girl in Santa Barbara, who loves to swim, dreams of being a mermaid and has nightmares of overpowering waves. Author and therapist, Janet Lucy, MA, explains, “These concepts are universal—dreams and fears of children and adults alike.”

The book travels through a magical underwater journey with the Ocean Goddess Yemaya who inspires the protagonist to overcome her fears. Janet  Lucy, co-author of Moon Mother, Moon Daughter ~ Myths and Rituals that Celebrate a Girl’s Coming of Age, also explains, “Mythology and storytelling are age-old methods of passing along wisdom, sharing experience and explaining or teaching about life. We want to teach girls to listen to an inner voice and offer tools to children who are facing similar fears. Yemaya represents a wise and protective divine mother as well as one strand of the little girl’s heritage who inspired the story.”

Executive Director of Seven Seas Press, Erika Romer, says, “We have known for a long time that representation in children’s books matters. The African Goddess Yemaya expands the mosaic of mermaid imagery so that more children can recognize themselves in this magical archetype. It was important to us to represent this story accurately and respectfully. We have been fortunate to receive the feedback and guidance of friends and experts who have helped us craft and refine this beautiful book. We hope it brings joy to all who read it.”

Colleen McCarthy-Evans, award-winning author, illustrator and game designer, has illustrated the book with luminous watercolor images that draw the reader into a magical story.
