Casa del Herrero to Hold First-Ever Sculpture Exhibition in Historic Garden Spaces

August 7, 2021 @ 7:00 am PDT

For the first time in its history, Casa del Herrero will be holding a sculpture exhibition with
artwork placed throughout the estate’s historic garden spaces. The Casa is pleased to announce
this new exhibition, Symbiotic – Seven Contemporary Sculptors at Historic Casa del Herrero,
which will be on view from July 7 to November 24, 2021.
The Casa’s original owners, Carrie and George Fox Steedman, were deeply passionate about the
estate, taking great care to develop gardens that reflected their creative interests. The resulting
spaces reveal themselves with thoughtfulness, evoking emotion and a feeling of tranquility.
While much of the Casa remains frozen in time, an important characteristic of its historic status,
there is very much a sense of connection through the memory and legacy of the estate. Symbiotic
looks at the interconnection between two seemingly disparate concepts (contemporary and
historic) while examining each artist’s relationship to the natural world.
“It is really quite compelling to view contemporary works of art against the backdrop of the
historic estate,” said Casa Board President Karen Jones Clark. “The Casa’s beautiful gardens
have become outdoor museum spaces in which to contemplate the fascinating sculptures in the
exhibition.”
Participating artists include Isaac Anguiano, Béla Bácsi, Robert J. Emmons, Pattie Porter
Firestone, Victoria Hendler, Joan Rosenberg-Dent, and Lynda Weinman.
The Casa gardens are beautiful, natural works of art, which our now complemented by the
figural, natural, and abstract forms of the sculptures. The collection of artwork (encompassing a
variety of mediums) seamlessly integrates with the uniqueness of the estate. In fact, there is an
undeniable connection between the two.
“While historic, the Casa remains alive with the creative legacy of the original owners,” said
Casa Executive Director Jessica Tade. “Through this exhibition, we are collaborating with local
artists while also continuing to make good on our desire to support the continued vibrancy of the
arts in our community.”
Tickets can be purchased by calling Casa del Herrero at (805) 565-5653.
The exhibition is possible thanks in part to generous lead sponsors Karen and Stephen Clark,
Marc Normand Gelinas Interior Design, and Francis Morrow.
