Ariadne’s Thread Art Opening

Ariadne’s Thread opens at the Art From Scrap Gallery on Friday, October 13, at 6:00 pm and will showcase the rich tradition of fiber arts in Santa Barbara. Colleen Darling, Syd McCutcheon, Mary Price, Maureen Ray, Sukey Buchanan, and Mary Stanley are among the diverse and talented group of artists exhibiting their work in this beautiful show.
The title derives from the legend of the Minotaur. Theseus, a mythical king-hero of Athens, offered to venture into the labyrinth and kill the Minotaur. Ariadne (daughter of King Minos) fell in love with Theseus and to ensure his safe return, provided him with a sword as a weapon, and a ball of thread, as a means by which he was to find his way back out of the labyrinth.
Mary Price, curator of the show says, “Thread, as metaphorical problem-solving device, is directly linked to fiber as an art medium. Fiber artists use their medium as a way to process emotions, and find their way out of complex situations. The result of their labors is often rich and beautiful, but the product is always secondary to the process.”
The public is invited to join Mary and the other talented fiber artists at the Art From Scrap Gallery on Friday, October 13th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served.
Ariadne’s Thread will grace the AFS Gallery walls from October 13 through Sunday, December 10, 2017. The AFS Gallery is located above the Art From Scrap Creative ReUse Store. Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Since 1990, Art From Scrap has diverted thousands of pounds of clean, reusable items from the landfill. We accept donations of used and new materials from both businesses and individuals. Located in downtown Santa Barbara, Art From Scrap is open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
