This year’s event follows in the unique tradition of New Beginnings’ previous Annual Fundraisers: using theater to engage the audience in discussion, experience, and education about the most critical issues facing our community, including issues with homelessness, mental health, permanent supportive housing, and more.
Jacqueline Kurta, New Beginnings’ Board of Directors President, says, “We are honored to be presenting “The Boys Next Door” as we continue the New Beginnings tradition of using the arts to educate and inspire our community. Please join us in celebrating compassion and collaboration as we work to empower individuals and families in need throughout Santa Barbara County.”

This year’s poignant and humorous event examines issues of housing, mental health issues, and developmental disabilities which are integral to New Beginnings’ mission to support individuals and families facing similar challenges in our community. Proceeds from the fundraiser will enable New Beginnings to continue providing quality, affordable counseling, shelter, case management, and homeless services, through its Counseling Center, Safe Parking Program, Veterans Program and Life Skills Parenting Program.
Synopsis:
This play delves into the lives of four men with mental health and developmental disabilities living together in a shared housing residence, all under the guidance of a caring but burned-out social worker. Through poignant and humorous moments, the play explores their daily challenges, triumphs, and aspirations, offering a heartfelt portrayal of their humanity and struggles.
Written in 1988, the play is a continued favorite and widely admired within the theater community.
