AIA Santa Barbara Design Charrette: Make State Street Work October 21st

October 21, 2017 @ 9:00 am PDT

On Saturday, October 21, from 9 AM until 6 PM, at the Louise Lowry Davis Center at 1232 De La Vina, AIA Santa Barbara will conduct a Design Charrette entitled Making State Street Work. Architectural Professionals, Landscape Architects and Planners from Santa Barbara will explore the issues of Housing, Retail, Economic, and more that are present on Lower State Street today.

The Making State Street Work Charrette will brainstorm fundamental changes to State Street to adjust to global shifts in retail resulting in vacant storefronts.  Working with the City of Santa Barbara, through this charrette AIA Santa Barbara seeks to help our community envision possibilities for dynamic working solutions for the State Street El Pueblo Viejo corridor from Gutierrez to Sola.  From the macro perspective of urban design to the micro look at singular parcels, Design Teams will discuss the opportunities on Lower State Street.

The Making State Street Work Charrette is about thinking different, big and bold – to get lots of ideas in true Charrette fashion.  Teams made of Landscape Architects, Architects, and Planners will delve into a section along State Street to study and redesign for a more vibrant, economically vital, and sustainable future for our downtown. Ideas generated will ultimately be presented to City Council for consideration and planning for positive change.

“Santa Barbara, going back almost 100 years, has a rich tradition of asking the architectural community to help envision it’s future. We see this charrette as an opportunity to continue that legacy and help stimulate the community to take the steps necessary to ensure a vital and sustainable Downtown.” – Brian Cearnal, AIA, LEED AP

AIA Santa Barbara invites Santa Barbara’s architects, associate architects, landscape architects, and planners to participate as part of a team for this one day event.  Members of the public are welcome to observe the design process throughout the day and attend the public presentations of the Design Team’s work from 3:30pm to 6pm.
